Greenhouse Living

Yaddo, an artist community founded in 1900 on 400 lush acres in Saratoga Springs, NY, values its history and historic buildings. But every now and then, new construction must replace old, without upsetting the aesthetic balance with the even older.

Yaddo needed to demolish Greenhouse Studios, built in 1986 on the footprint of the original estate’s greenhouse, which was too damaged to repair. A new 2,900-square-foot facility, constructed by Teakwood Builders according to a design by Balzer + Tuck Architects, contains two living spaces and a communal kitchen, as well as two studios. Both studios are used as work spaces for visual artists, but one features a resilient sprung floor to accommodate choreographers and performance artists.

After the Greenhouse Studios were vacated, artists in residence at the time were invited to express themselves freely inside the building before it was demolished. View a sampling of the work they created here.
