A Thoughtful Rebuild for an Iconic Artist Retreat
When Yaddo, the historic artists’ retreat in Saratoga Springs, needed to replace its aging Greenhouse Studios, preserving the estate’s architectural harmony was essential. The original 1986 structure, built on the site of the estate’s former greenhouse, had deteriorated beyond repair. Teakwood Builders, working with Balzer & Tuck Architecture, constructed a new 2,900-square-foot facility that blends seamlessly into Yaddo’s storied landscape while meeting the needs of today’s artists. The building features two private living quarters, a shared kitchen, and two light-filled studios—one equipped with a sprung floor to support choreographers and performance artists.
Before its demolition, resident artists were invited to transform the old Greenhouse Studios with their creative expressions, giving the space one last artistic legacy. The result is a structure that not only honors Yaddo’s past but also supports its mission to foster creativity for generations to come.
