This position is ideal for the professional painter who likes a range of residential projects, working both indoors and outside.

Position Summary

The Painter performs routine to moderately complex surface preparation, painting, and finishing tasks, applying a variety of methods, media, and techniques to both interior and exterior surfaces. Painting primarily focuses on residential building, remodeling, and repair projects, but may also include work for light commercial/small business clients. While work is performed independently and with minimal direct supervision, the Painter works in collaboration with others, including Project Managers, Lead Carpenters, Carpenters, and Designers. Assignments will vary between larger Teakwood building/remodeling projects and smaller projects/repairs for Concierge Services.

Essential Functions

  • Preparing the work area: Covering furniture and floors with drop cloths and tarps, removing outlet covers, and taping off areas
  • Preparing the surface: Sanding, filling holes and cracks, and removing old paint; exterior and interior caulking, finish repair, mud and tape, and texturing tasks; minor plaster and/or drywall repair, blending newly renovated wall surfaces with existing
  • Applying paint: Mixing and applying paints, sealers, and solvents to exterior and interior building surfaces such as plaster, sheetrock, concrete, and wood, using brushes, rollers, and sprayers; special refinishing tasks including wood surface preparation, staining, and sealing
  • Protecting the surrounding area: Covering fixtures and furniture to prevent messes
  • Operating equipment: Such as airless spray equipment, scaffolding, and motorized lifts
  • Cleaning up: Cleaning up supplies and returning fixtures daily as needed and when the project is complete
  • Communicating with clients: Advising clients on colors, mediums, and other options
  • Estimating time and materials: Surveying the project site to calculate the amount of paint and time needed and to select appropriate surface coatings
  • Collaborating with others: Working with other painters on larger jobs, and with construction professionals like carpenters, electricians, plumbers, and designers
  • Ensuring quality: Performing a final inspection to ensure the work is accurate and of high quality
  • Following safety rules: Adhering to workplace safety rules and regulations; ensuring proper care in the use and maintenance of equipment and supplies
  • Painters may also hang wallpaper or other decorative products

Knowledge/Skills/Abilities

  • Knowledge of: Painting and staining materials, practices, tools, equipment, and methods
  • Skilled in: Selecting and applying paint and associated products; applying coatings and/or caulking and completing repairs to exterior and interior surfaces; wood surface preparation, staining, and/or sealing techniques; communicating to convey information in order to ensure accuracy of color selection and application techniques; precision of application, cutting a straight line, painting in soft strokes and with no roller marks
  • Able to: Use hand and power tools applicable to painting; select, mix, and apply surface coatings which successfully match and/or restore interior or exterior surfaces; read, understand, follow, and enforce safety procedures; estimate basic project time and material quantity requirements; work at heights on scaffolding, lifts, and ladders; stay physically active for many hours and spend much of the workday standing or climbing ladders; move heavy items during the course of a job

Education/Experience/Other Requirements

  • High school diploma or GED
  • 5 years of full-time or equivalent painting experience
  • Driver license valid in NYS at time of appointment and continuously thereafter
  • Pre-employment criminal background check

Schedule/Work Environment

  • FLSA nonexempt, full-time, 40 hours/week (Mon-Fri, 7:00 a.m.-3:30 p.m., 30-minute unpaid meal period); minimal overtime as needed to complete tasks within project timeline; flexible hours may be needed based on the Client’s ability to accommodate hours onsite
  • Indoor work that may include confined spaces and exposure to dust and other irritants
  • Outdoor work that may include exposure to weather conditions and noise levels that may be distracting or uncomfortable
  • Routine operation of a motor vehicle to travel within a designated area of assignment that may not be served by public transportation
  • Prolonged periods of standing, bending, kneeling, reaching, climbing, working at heights
  • Occasionally lifting up to 50 lbs.
